Mission Statement
The mission of this website is to distribute and share knowledge regarding the naturally occurring snakes--and other reptiles and amphibians--of Arkansas. Efforts will be made to dispel misconceptions and fears. Information will be presented in a healthy, environmentally-conscious manner to promote the beauty, fascination, and value of these spectacular animals!
Audience
This website is targeted toward:
- Anyone who has a general interest in our natural world and herptiles in particular.
- Anyone who has a question about snakes (or other herptiles) and is wanting it answered by people who really know.
- Students who are looking for information to include in book reports, presentations, etc.
- Professionals, semi-professionals, and knowledgeable amateurs who wish to share and distribute knowledge.
Community
This website has been developed around the concept of community. The Forum provides a place for people to make announcements, ask questions, start discussions, offer feedback, and share knowledge. The Gallery displays user-contributed pictures. Most pages are editable by the public through the use of a Wiki interface. Visitors are encouraged to register on the Forum so they can introduce themselves and get started.
Disclaimer
This website is intended for educational and entertainment purposes only. It makes no guarantees as to the accuracy, usefulness, or completeness of information. Handling techniques, as represented in pictures and/or text, should not be considered an adequate substitute for proper training and experience, nor should one assume these always represent "best practices". If you choose to handle--or come into close proximity with--reptiles or amphibians you do so at your own risk.
Arkansas Herpetological Society (AHS)
- Educate the general public about native herpetofauna.
- Encourage conservation of all wildlife and herpetofauna in particular.
- Provide a means of communication and cooperation between professional herpetologists and amateur enthusiasts.
- Assist various wildlife management areas, state parks, and similar organizations in conducting herpetological field surveys.
- Broaden our understanding of the distribution and abundance of native herpetofauna through selective collection and/or documentation.
The AHS is NOT a herpetocultural society (though we encourage the keeping of unprotected native herpetofauna for educational purposes). If you are interested in keeping and breeding exotic herpetofauna, we might suggest you join the Central Arkansas Herpetological Society.
Membership
There is currently no formal membership (or associated membership dues) required to participate in AHS activities. We only ask that members register on the Forum so they can participate in online discussions and catch announcements for the group.
Events
The AHS currently hosts 2 or more field trips each year. These are typically scheduled for early spring and mid-fall when reptile and amphibian activity is at its greatest. Everyone is invited to participate!
The last field trip took place Friday-Sunday, April 18-20, 2008 at Mount Magazine State Park, Logan County, Arkansas.
The next field trip will take place in the fall. The date and location are TBD.
Surveys
Starting in the spring of 2007, the AHS began assisting the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission in their efforts to document box turtles. Information for participating members will be posted on the forum as it becomes available.
Starting in the spring of 2008, the AHS began assisting the CH2M HILL OMI in their efforts to establish a baseline herpetological survey of properties managed near the Paul R. Noland Wastewater Treatment Plant in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Information for participating members is posted as an announcement in the AHS forum.
Herping Challenges
Arkansas presents several herping challenges that AHS members are continually striving to meet. These challenges are both fun and scientifically significant. Please contact us if you have additional information to share.
