First of all, a herpetologist is simply one who studies herpetology. Anyone can be a herpetologist, and you can't beat experience to be "adequately trained." With that said, hang around other herpetologists, and watch and learn from them. Over time, you will be able to do the same things with similar credibility, which is very important. Nobody will hire you as a herpetologist if your practices are unsafe, or you have a bad reputation.

As far as employment, it is a highly competitive field. It is not necessary for an advanced degree, however some positions/facilities may require it. You could also use those qualifications in medical sciences depending on you degree of expertise in certain areas. For instance, if you study venoms and effects, you could help diagnose venomous bites on patients, and give your expert opinion on method of treatment.

I have several boas and pythons for sale. i have reduced the prices on all of them. I am downsizing my collection and want to make more space for the snakes that i will be keeping therefore i will be selling very nice custom built cages made from 3/4in stained and treated oak plywood w/ looking glass and side doors and front doors. cost on the cages vary by size. the snakes that i am trying to get rid of are
1. ball python $25 (male) 1. Jungle carpet python $200(female) 1.Argentine boa $100(male)
1. tumaharan dwarf boa $150(male). If you are not interested in these I also have 1. green Anaconda(male) and 1. yellow anaconda(male) that i might consider selling to someone with experience with these snakes. prices on these snakes have not been determined. If you are interested you can write to me here or at my email fight4fire@yahoo.com.
I live in the N.W. Arkansas area and will not ship the snakes or cages but can make arrangements to meet somewhere. will provide pictures to anyone that wants them or your welcome to come look at them in person.

No need for a pack mule. You're supposed to pack light when you herp or you'll scare the snakes away with the pans and canteens clanking down the side of the mountain. 8O

You could help unload the "camp kitchen" though. haha.

I'm not a turtle keeper by any means, but I don't understand how anything could "smother" the carapace of a turtle. Its pretty much all dead tissue on the outside just like our skin, so they don't exchange gases (oxygen, CO2) and most (except softshells) do not exchange much water across it, either.

OTOH, for the same reasons I agree that putting any kind of vitamin oil/salve/etc. on the shell is going to be a waste of time unless there is an open wound in the shell. Growth deformities like this are the result of nutritional deficiencies, not shell damage/rot/infection, etc. As long as the turtle starts getting fed real food, the shell should grow a little better- probably not perfectly, but at least better than it is.

as you can see, I really dont' think there is any shell rot. Anja suggested that he probably had some sort of funk built up on his shell from living in an aquarium. He's eating pretty good. Hopefully he will turn out okay.
Thanks for all the suggestions. :)

The most common general consensus among keepers is that oils smother the carapace. I also did speak with a very respected keeper about the cat food and while its OK occasionally for adults, he would never feed it to hatchlings or juveniles and would not feed it to any turtle with MBD. I'm just personally not a big fan of anything developed for mammals being fed to my tortoises/turtles, this is an argument within the Redfoot Tortoise community as well.

[Field Plans and Reports] WDB as found in the wild

Post subject: WDB as found in the wild

As promised I am posting some photographs of WDB as they were found in the wild. You will notice that they prefer heavy brush or grass where they can blend in and use their camouflage. Once in a while they will be sunning in the open. Sometimes you will only see a portion of a coil and by the time you get there, they have disappeared deep into the dark. Please note the first ever photo of Half Coil. A friend was with me the day we found Half Coil. I told him that I found a snake and pointed directly to it. He moved within two feet of the snake and still could not see it until I actually touched the snake causing it to move.

Two of the photographs were taken at the main den site. If you will look at my last post for the den photo, you will see the difference between the upper crevice and the lower crevice. Have found it is always good to check the den very closely, you never know what you will find hiding deep in the recess of this rock. The best way to check the crevices is with a small mirror. The reflection is much brighter than a flashlight.

I hope you all enjoy these snakes as much as I do. Going to the mountain is like going home. The faces are beginning to look very familiar and almost friendly. And just like my dog, they always wag their tails when I come around.

Good. I was going by body shape, stripe color and pattern, and the large parietal spot. I wanted to check more solid traits (was thinking more about the stripe on x scale row), but the fact that you mentioned the preocular makes me feel better. I forgot about that trait and do to the rain did not get out my field guide before release.
