What people often call a "blue-tailed lizard" is actually the young of a species of Great Skink (Genus Eumeces). Several of these species have young that look practically identical. In the field, correct identification often requires an examination of scale traits.

This particular lizard was hatched in captivity. The eggs were collected after an accidental unearthing.
